Pre-Kindergarten

The Pre-K class is busy learning the alphabet and sounds. Students are currently working on the letters I, P, and N. They have also been learning about Thanksgiving and the history behind the meaning of Thanksgiving. Pre-K is now getting ready for the Christmas Extravaganza by learning the songs that they will be singing.

Kindergarten

Kindergarteners are so excited about their visit on November 21 from Watson the certified reading therapy dog. Be looking for pictures of his visit in the December newsletter. Here are some facts about Watson:

· Watson is an 8 year old miniature schnauzer

· He has been a therapy dog for almost 2 years

· He loves to visit schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and libraries

· He won a trip from Barkbox last year to visit New York

· He was recently recognized as a “reading superhero” dressed like Bolt at a reading pep rally

· He has been part of a program called “reading to rover” where children with reading difficulties read to dogs

· He is excited about his second visit to Scurry-Rosser Elementary School

First Grade

First grade is using technology to take students on a virtual field trip aboard the Mayflower. Students explore the Mayflower and see life as Pilgrims knew it. They experience the Pilgrims’ journey and hardships. Students are also taking a virtual field trip to a Pilgrim village to see how Pilgrims lived and worked. They will then compare the Pilgrims’s lives to the native Wampanoag. By using technology, students are able to develop an understanding of the Pilgrims’ experiences and the importance of the first Thanksgiving.

First grade is also reading more and stressing fluency. In math, students are learning different ways to solve addition and subtraction problems. First Graders are learning so much!

Second Grade

The second grade teachers would like to thank all the parents that were able to come to the awards assembly and the Thanksgiving feast! In Math, students are currently working on double digit addition and subtraction, as well as reviewing place value. In Language Arts, they are writing what they are thankful for, as well as learning about adverbs. In Science, students are exploring heat, light and sound. In Reading, students are discussing the first Thanksgiving. Please remember to be looking at your child’s behavior card each night and signing it.

Third Grade

Third grade “Rockin’ Readers” are off to a great start on the road to reading success! Students have definitely caught the “Reading Fever.” They have thoroughly enjoyed the reading competition in each homeroom class.

The Spotlight “Visualize” Reader Responses are causing other students to check out books and read more!

Congratuations to readers: Devin Weller (Mrs. Palm’s homeroom), Michelle Stroud (Mrs. Wampler’s Homeroom), Brandon Gerard (Mrs. Griffin’s Homeroom) and Dawson Hatcher (Mrs. Rooswinkel’s Homeroom) for winning the 1st 9 weeks “Rockin’ Reader” awards for the “Most Reads”!

Third grade math is about to begin multiplication and division! Things to practice at home in addition to facts are: counting handfuls of coins, finding the sums and differences of different amounts of coins as well as three digit numbers. Oswego Math: Math Magician (http://resources.oswego.org/games/mathmagician/maths1.html) is a great online resource for practicing timed facts!
