Kindergarten
Kindergarteners are learning about whole numbers from 0-20 and drawing these numbers in groups/sets. We are also learning how to count higher than 10. In Science we are learning how to observe, compare, measure and sort when doing investigations. In reading we read Simon and Molly plus Hester as well as Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse. These are both great books. Ask your child about these storybook characters. We want to send a big thank you to all of our parents/visitors for helping make our Mystery Reader Activity such a huge success.
First Grade
There is lots going on in first grade. First graders have learned how to make applesauce. They have also learned about what an antonym is (the opposite of something). We have been working very hard on math facts and greater than and less than. Please make sure you are listening to your first grader read each night. This helps them become better, more fluent readers. As you all know, first grade moves at a very fast pace, so thank you for being patient and all of your help and support.
Second Grade
In Second grade we read a story about making butter. Then we followed the instructions in the story and made butter in class. After making the butter, we all tasted it. The students decided that it was the best butter they had ever tasted. A huge thank you to the parents who sent bread and whipping cream. In math, 2nd graders are working on basic addition facts, doubles (4+4=8, 11+11=22) and word problems. We have also been working on writing number sentences: 3+5=8. We are doing lots of practice on these math concepts because they help us with everything we do in math. Thanks for practicing math facts at home with your child.
Third Grade
Third grade is working hard in math. We are working on word problems involving addition and subtraction with regrouping through 1,000; as well as subtracting across zeros. These concepts are hard for third graders to grasp so we will be doing lots of practice. Money is our next adventure. We will be finding the value of a collection of bills and coins. So please, put a handful of coins down in front of your kiddo and have them calculate the value! In reading, we are working on poetry and in writing we are learning how to write procedural text papers, A.K.A. “how to” papers. Ask your child about the steps it takes to carve a pumpkin. Parents, thanks for all you do to help out.
